The Alabama Crimson Tide entered last night’s BCS Championship Game ranked no. 2 in the nation behind their opponent the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Four quarters later, Alabama was crowned the national champion after defeating Notre Dame 42-14 in a game that was dominated from start to finish by the Crimson Tide.
Alabama scored a touchdown on its first three possessions in the first half to take a halftime lead of 28-0. Midway through the third quarter the lead was extended to 35-0 before Notre Dame was able to break into the scoring column but by that time, the outcome was already known.
Alabama has now won 9 national championships more than any college football program in the country. Before the game, most figured the outcome would be much closer as both teams possessed two of the top 10 defenses in the nation. However, it was the offensive ground game and passing attack of Alabama that shredded the defense of Notre Dame.
After going undefeated during the regular season, Notre Dame could not get off the starting block in this game. The Irish offense sputtered early and often and looked out of sync. Much of that was attributed to the intense defensive pressure Alabama put on freshman quarterback Everett Golson.
The win gave Alabama its second consecutive national title and its third in the past four seasons.
