Udall’s Lifeless Body Found in Wyoming

A team searching for James Udall, the son of Morris Udall found his body in the Wind River Range in Wyoming Wednesday after the hiker did not return from a backpacking trip he had taken alone.

Udall, who was 61, was raised in Tucson, Arizona, while his father was a member of the U.S. Congress. He left for a trek of a week on June 20, from trailhead that was 10 miles to the northwest of Pinedale. He had been due back over a week ago.

Udall’s body was spotted by an aerial team, in rolling terrain that was open, said officials from the Sublette Sheriff’s department.

An autopsy will be performed, but it appears Udall died of natural causes, said the family in a prepared statement that was released by Senator Mark Udall’s Congressional office. Mark Udall is a U.S. Senator from Colorado and James Udall’s brother.

The statement from family said that Randy died doing what he most loved, hiking and on his most favorite range.

Udall had three children and told his wife that he was planning to visit Titcomb Basin. On Wednesday, the family announced that it appeared he had taken an off-trail obscure route.

Udall, who at the time lived in Carbondale, Colorado, was an environmentalist and advocate for energy efficiency.

Although he did not seek a life of public office, his family is very well known throughout Western politics.

His older brother is a senator from Colorado. Tom Udall, a Senator from New Mexico is his cousin. Stewart Udall, his uncle was a 1960s Interior secretary. His father Morris was a 30-year veteran of Congress and ran in 1976 for the presidency.
