On Thursday afternoon, a Delta Airlines flight was quarantined at Midway Airport in Chicago. One of the passengers, Lise Sievers says her recent trip to Uganda may have been the cause of the quarantine. She is adopting two children and while in Uganda, her family stayed at a hotel and she thinks she was contaminated with something from the hotel room. She said her son, who is four, had pustules on his body.
The flight was out of Detroit and passengers had to remain on board for over two hours following the landing. Passengers on board said the plane had been surrounded by emergency and medical personnel. Because the passenger mentioned she had been to Africa, there was a concern the rash on her son may have been monkey pox, said the Centers for Disease Control. The passenger received an evaluation by local medical personnel and members of the CDC. Based on symptoms and photos of the rash, it was determined that the rash was not consistent with monkey pox.
Photos by passengers, while the plane was under quarantine, were posted on Twitter. After the family had been checked, the passengers were allowed to leave the plane. The CDC said they would have a follow up with the Sievers’ family at a still undetermined time.
Security and law enforcement personnel praised the way everyone involved responded to the quarantine. Even the police department of Chicago praised the way the passengers accepted the delay and said very few if any complained.
