Chicken Salads at Trader Joe’s Being Recalled

Chicken salads under the name Huxtable’s Kitchen salads include contaminated red onions. The onions are contaminated with listeria, which could cause a disease that has a mortality rate of 20%. Over two tons of chicken salad that was sold through Trader Joe’s was recalled due to the possibility it could contain contaminated red onions that have the deadly bacteria.

The salads in question included Gills Onions diced red onions. Gills is a farm in California who had its products recalled because of a potential listeria contamination.

Listeria can be deadly because its infection, listeriosis has a 20% rate of mortality. Those most affected by the bacteria are children, those who have weakened immune systems like those with AIDS, pregnant women and the elderly. Compared to non-pregnant healthy adults, pregnant women have a 20 time higher rate of contracting listeriosis.

Total weight of the salads being recalled are 5,600 pounds. They were all distributed in Texas, Nevada, Southern California, New Mexico and Arizona. No illnesses to date have been reported with most believing none will surface. A Gills Farm spokesperson, Amy Philtott said the company could not say what the root cause of the contamination was. She said the company was going to shut down one if is factories were the onions that were recalled had been contaminated.

On numerous occasion executives or management at Trader Joe’s were left messages but no one from the company has made any comments thus far.
