Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Located in Cave

In the depths of a New Mexico cave, an incredible discovery was made by researchers. They discovered antibiotic-resistant bacteria, even though the bacteria have been isolated pristinely from any human contact for what is believed to be millions of years.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria was thought to come about because of indiscriminate and wholesale use of medications to both prevent and treat disease in animals and people.

Of late, a large number of bacteria that is disease-causing became immune to the majority of antibiotics that are now used. One such bacterium is MRSA. Pharmaceutical companies and scientists have been scrambling trying to find new medications that will kill the bacteria.

Discovery of new bacteria that is naturally resistant in Carlsbad Cavern National Park’s Lechuguilla Cave is a big increase in resistance threatening understanding of the many infectious diseases across the globe.

It now can be confirmed that it is not just man-made. The findings prove that a resistance to antibiotics in bacteria is hard-wired and not helped by man. The scientists said the findings suggest there are many additional antibiotics that could be discovered to treat infections that are currently untreatable.

That is because a bacterium makes its own particular antibiotic in order to fight off other types of bacteria. The scientists explained it as a form of germ warfare where they are carrying out their own arms race. The weapons they make to fight off one another are our forms of antibiotics said one of the researchers.
