Spanish authorities have arrested members of al-Qaeda, who were planning some sort of terrorist attack. The three men arrested had a huge stockpile of varying explosives. Law enforcement in Spain believes the suspects were planning an attack for Europe or Spain itself.
Undated photos of the suspects were released by authorities in Spain. Two suspects are from Russia, while one is from Turkey. All three had been under close surveillance by authorities. On Wednesday, two of the men took a bus trip towards the border with France. Authorities arrested them just before the border with France. The men were thought to be leaving the country.
Later on Wednesday police also arrested the Turkish national. He was taken into custody at his home in La Linea, which is a town on the coast hear Gibraltar. The Ministry of the Interior in Spain said the Turk was a terror facilitator and had enough explosives at his home to blow up an entire passenger bus.
Authorities also found at the suspect’s home training manuals for ultra light aircraft along with flying manuals for remote control airplanes. The ultra light aircraft can land and take off very easily from small airstrips.
Law enforcement officials in Spain said that it was very clear the three men were planning to carry out a terrorist attack somewhere in Europe or in Spain. The arrests on Wednesday showed that the terrorist group still maintains an infrastructure throughout the region that it is attempting to use.
