Wise (NASDAQ: WSE) buys 1.2 million of its own shares in one week of buybacks

What happened

Wise Group plc (NASDAQ: WSE) repurchased 1,227,355 of its Class A ordinary shares from Oct. 26 through Oct. 30. The company said it will hold the shares in treasury.

The purchases are part of the buyback announced July 21. Wise expects to repurchase up to £405 million (approximately $540 million) of its Class A ordinary shares under it. That is a cap, not money spent.

Nasdaq and other US venues accounted for 549,579 shares. The London Stock Exchange and other venues accounted for 677,776, or 55.2% of the total. Goldman Sachs International or one of its affiliates handled both sets.

On Nasdaq, Wise bought 100,000 shares on Oct. 27, Oct. 29 and Oct. 30, 150,000 on Oct. 28 and 99,579 on Oct. 26. On the London Stock Exchange's XLON venue, daily purchases ranged from 82,576 shares on Oct. 28 to 148,843 on Oct. 27.

Prices were lower at the end of the week. The volume-weighted average price Wise paid on Nasdaq fell from $11.04 on Oct. 26 to $10.82 on Oct. 30. On XLON it fell from £8.29 to £8.12 over the same dates.

Why it matters

OptimistFi has argued that Wise works if its cross-border network keeps taking share and revenue turns back into durable per-share earnings after the FY2026 margin reset. Buybacks speak to the per-share half of that argument, so OptimistFi reads the update as mixed.

This is a routine buyback report, and the operating figures in it are historical. In fiscal year 2026, Wise supported around 19 million people and businesses, processed over $240 billion in cross-border transactions and saved customers over $3 billion.

What's next

Wise's next quarterly report is the next test. Per-share earnings that hold up after the FY2026 margin reset would strengthen OptimistFi's case. Weaker conversion of revenue into earnings would weaken it.

The weekly purchase counts matter less than whether revenue growth reaches per-share earnings.
