CollPlant’s LightSolver signs paid Israel defense computing deal (NASDAQ: CLGN)

What happened

CollPlant Biotechnologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CLGN) said its subsidiary LightSolver signed a paid deal with Israel's Ministry of Defense to develop and deliver an LPU. The deal is with the ministry's Directorate of Defense Research Development.

It follows earlier proof-of-concept work with the directorate and moves the relationship to a multi-year framework. LightSolver has secured an initial order for the first 12 months. LPU stands for Laser Processing Unit, the photonic computing product LightSolver develops.

Senior ministry representatives formally signed the agreement. It covers intellectual property and technology usage rights.

Why it matters

A government defense customer is now paying for LightSolver's technology after the earlier proof-of-concept work. That is the point for CollPlant holders. Chief Executive Dr. Ruti Ben Shlomi said the deal, together with an existing multi-year engineering program with Boeing, shows progress in turning technical validation into paid customer programs.

The release puts LightSolver's defense market at up to $5 billion a year worldwide, growing at about 15% a year, and cites Hyperion Research 2025. That is the company's estimate. It is a ceiling, not a measure of this contract.

OptimistFi has argued that CollPlant is a platform bet that needs partner funding before cash burn and dilution erode its option value. A paying defense customer fits the partner-funded part of that view. But the work is photonic computing, not collagen, so the effect is mixed.

The release itself warns that the directorate may not fund future phases and that the program could be delayed, reduced or terminated.

What's next

The initial order covers only the first stretch of the engagement. The directorate's decision on funding later phases is the next test. CollPlant's next quarterly or annual report is where an update would appear.

A funded follow-on would strengthen OptimistFi's view that partners can carry development costs. A delay, cut or termination, all listed as risks in the release, would weaken it.
