Zynga Acquires Omgpop

Zynga is the Facebook leader for games, but is not as popular with mobile games. The company wants a huge market presence in the mobile game industry. To help them accomplish that, they acquired Omgpop, the developer of Draw Something as well as over 35 other games.

The purchase price was not disclosed by the two companies on Wednesday, but two other companies had been considering purchasing Omgpop for around $200 million, before Zynga beat them to it. Omgpop has been in existent since 2006, but not until six weeks ago when it released Draw Something did the company become instantly prominent.

The game can be used for both Android devices and Apple iOS and challenges one of the players to draw an object while the second player tries to figure out what is being drawn. The game thus far has been downloaded over 35 million times and is Apple’s App Store’s current top title. It is only priced at $0.99, but virtual items and other content can be purchased.

Omgpop’s Dan Porter, its CEO, will become Zynga New York’s vice president. His company had 40 employees before Zynga purchased it. Zynga by far dominates all others in Facebook games, as it has six of the social networking site’s 10 most popular titles. However, in mobile games its does not fare as well. Its most popular mobile game is just no. 10 on the list of top ten titles.
