Top Browser is now Chrome

The top internet browser in the world is now Chrome. The browser last week topped Internet Explorer to become the world’s most used browser. The browser had gained incredible momentum over the past year and one tracking site says it is now the world’s most popular, overtaking Microsoft’s perennial winner.

The data that was compiled by StatCounter, an analytical site, for the week of May 14 through May 20 showed that Chrome held 32.76% of the market and Microsoft 31.94%. Nevertheless, at the beginning of the current week, Chrome was down nearly a point to 31.88% and Internet Explorer was sitting at 31.47%.

In March, some users of the web were surprised by Chrome when it took over the lead from Internet Explorer for one day. Shortly thereafter, it dropped back into second place. Whether or not Chrome will be able to take the lead for the long term in the browser war is still up in the air, but more and more usage of Chrome is taking place especially on the weekend. On industry expert said the weekend was a good indicator of true popularity since most people browsing are on their own time and have a choice as to what browser to use.

In addition, it is important to realize that the method StatCounter uses to count data is different from most other analytic firms. StatCounter takes raw page views, but does not correct data for geographic difference between its own network usage and that of global browsing patterns.

In the U.S., Chrome still is far from overtaking Internet Explorer. Last month Microsoft’s Internet Explorer had 37.81% of the market, while Chrome only held 23.83%.
