Through the use of Bluetooth, the Pebble, a smartwatch prototype will connect to your Android or iPhone and get calendar alerts, display caller ID, run simple applications and show updates of social media. The watch is being promoted currently on Kickstarter a crowdfunding platform and is not available for sale as of yet, but it has already seen its demand skyrocket.
In only 30 hours, over 8,500 backers have committed to funds of $1.17 million to ensure that Pebble becomes more than just a prototype. Other smartwatches have been around, with Apple reportedly working on one to operate on the OS platform. This watch is different since it does not try to run on an OS. By having the watch do all the processing, it is basically a display that only uses your mobile device to receive and process data.
The watch also allows you to control music that is on the phone, perform like a bike computer and create commands known as iftt, if, this, then and that. Pebble is brought to life through Apps. Cyclists will be able to use Pebble like a bike computer that accesses GPS on your smartphone that allows it to display distance, spend and data about pace. Runners can also get a similar display of data on their watches.
Insiders say the price of the Pebble will be $150, even though some supporters on Kickstarter are saying it could be less. Sony has also announced it will release a smartwatch that will only contact to Android.
