Asus and Acer two PC makers based in Taiwan took another attempt at entering the tablet market by unveiling a number of new products that use the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system. The tablets were showcased by the companies on the eve of Asia’s largest fair for IT, Computex. The fair is held this week in Taipei and is expected to put a great deal of focus on Windows 8.
Acer, which reduced its European payroll by several hundred jobs last year, has struggled to gain a foothold in the tablet market. It unveiled its latest attempts named W700 and W510. The chairman of Acer, J.T. Wang, also unveiled its new small laptop, Aspire S7 that will also run on Windows 8.
An Acer corporate president said that the touchscreen experience from Windows 8 is a huge step forward as it makes the computing experience much more intuitive.
Apple does not take part at the Computex however the fair will highlight the company’s importance since much of what take places at the fair will be a direct response to the trends in the market set by Apple.
Computex will have over 1,800 exhibitors that register over 5,400 booths, which is a 2% increase from last year. An estimated 36,000 buyers from foreign countries will arrive and purchase orders valued at up to $28 billion.
