Tiger Woods had only won the Players Championship on one occasion prior to this past weekend. The world’s No. 1 golf professional won back in 2000 but has had his share of problems on the famous stadium course.
However, Woods called upon all of his talent and hard work to win the event Sunday by 2 strokes over one of the most talented fields in any tournament this year.
When Woods reached the 14th hole, he was in the lead by two strokes, but when he completed the hole, he had fallen back into a tie after recording a double bogey.
Spain’s Sergio Garcia was in the day’s last group however and reached the famed 17th and its island green tied with Woods at 13 under par. The golfing gods were not so kind to Garcia, as he hit two straight shots into the water and recorded a quadruple bogey 7.
Woods now has won 4 of the 7 events he has started on the PGA tour this season, 7 of the last 21 stretching back to last season and raised his record to 52-4 when leading or tied heading into the last round of a tournament.
Woods has won 78 tournaments in 300 starts in his PGA career, and is only four wins behind Sam Snead’s all time mark of 82.
Woods will now enter the second major of the season, the U.S. Open, in mid June, as the overwhelming favorite.
