Why Is Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) Stock Up 189% This Year?

What happened

Shares of Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) closed at $245.28 on October 14, up 188.6% from the December 31, 2025 close. The clearest business support is accelerating AI data-center demand, record revenue, a $2 billion investment from NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), and repeated increases to management's fiscal 2027 outlook.

The year began with a stronger base. On March 5, Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) reported record fiscal 2026 revenue of $8.195 billion, up 42%, and said record design wins should support faster growth in fiscal 2027.

On March 31, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) invested $2 billion in Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL). The companies also agreed to connect custom processors and scale-up networking with the NVLink Fusion ecosystem and collaborate on silicon photonics.

That sequence helps explain why expectations rose. It does not prove that those events caused the entire share-price gain. Interest rates, semiconductor sentiment, positioning, and trading flows also affect the price.

The move in numbers

The return is reproducible. Divide the October 14 close of $245.27999877929688 by the December 31 close of $84.9800033569336, subtract one, and multiply by 100. The result is 188.6326%, rounded to 189% in the headline.

FinanceCharts independently showed both closes at $84.98 and $245.28. StockAnalysis also showed the October 14 close at $245.28. Yahoo reported four $0.06 cash dividends and no split during the window, so the calculation uses comparable Close values and excludes dividend reinvestment.

The latest operating figures were also stronger. Second-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue reached $2.739 billion, up 36.5%. Data-center revenue rose 46%, and GAAP gross margin increased 2.7 percentage points to 53.1% as higher revenue and product mix improved cost absorption.

There is already a demanding expectation in the price. Multiplying the October 14 close by management's 900 million guided third-quarter basic shares gives a rough $220.8 billion equity-value proxy. Dividing that by four times the $3.15 billion quarterly revenue-guide midpoint gives 17.5 times annualized guided revenue.

How the business works

Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) is a fabless chip designer. It sells the custom processors, optical digital-signal processors, Ethernet switches, storage controllers, and connectivity chips that move data inside and between AI systems.

The attraction is the design cycle. A hyperscaler can spend years building a custom processor or networking platform, then buy production silicon across several product generations. Optical and switching products can also grow as AI clusters add more accelerators and require faster connections.

The company widened that portfolio in February by acquiring privately held Celestial AI, Inc. and privately held XConn Technologies Holdings, Ltd. First-quarter results included both businesses after closing, so some reported growth reflects acquisition scope as well as underlying demand.

The moat is not automatic. Large cloud customers can bring more design work in-house, or award custom silicon and networking sockets to another supplier. The stock works only if Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) converts its bookings and design wins into repeatable revenue, gross profit, cash flow, and per-share value.

Why the case is still difficult

The 17.5-times proxy is not a full valuation. It uses a guided share count, annualizes one quarter, ignores cash, debt, taxes, future dilution, and seasonality, and does not separate acquired revenue. It still shows how much execution the market is assuming.

Spending is rising quickly. Second-quarter research and development expense increased 42.8%, faster than revenue's 36.5% gain. Stock compensation rose to $326.2 million, or 11.9% of revenue, from 7.7% a year earlier.

Acquisitions also complicate GAAP profit. The second-quarter filing recorded a $101.9 million increase in the fair value of contingent consideration tied to Celestial AI, Inc. Higher acquired-intangible amortization and purchase-accounting items can make headline earnings diverge from the economics investors care about.

The strongest bear case is that AI infrastructure spending remains healthy but customers internalize more silicon, shift designs to rivals, or slow deployments. In that outcome, revenue can still grow while margins or the valuation multiple contract.

What's next

The next observable test is third-quarter results. Management guided to $3.15 billion of revenue at the midpoint, 53.4% GAAP gross margin at the midpoint, and $0.53 of GAAP diluted earnings per share.

Investors should compare the result with data-center growth, the promised acceleration in custom products, cash flow, research spending, stock compensation, and basic shares. A higher revenue outlook matters more if gross margin and per-share earnings rise with it.

The 188.6% gain reflects a stronger operating record, but it is not an investment conclusion by itself. Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) still has to prove that AI bookings become durable revenue and that revenue becomes cash and earnings fast enough to support the valuation.
