What happened
Vermilion Energy Inc. (NYSE: VET) raised its five-year excess free cash flow estimate by C$200 million to C$1.9 billion. The comparison is with the outlook from its Q4 2025 Investor Day.
Excess free cash flow, or EFCF, is the cash left from fund flows after capital spending, lease payments and settled asset retirement obligations. Vermilion uses it to size what it can return to shareholders.
The Calgary company said the revision reflects 2026 outperformance, its 2027 budget and strip pricing. Its assumptions for 2028 through 2030 are unchanged. It announced the change on Nov. 4 with third-quarter results.
The board also approved a 2027 exploration and development budget of C$675 million to C$725 million. Production guidance is 122,000 to 126,000 boe/d, about 71% natural gas. Vermilion calls that 2% absolute growth and 5% growth per share from 2026. It plans a 4% increase in the quarterly dividend to C$0.14 per share, subject to board approval in March 2027.

Third-quarter cash flow and the loss
Quarterly cash flow fell from a year ago even as prices rose. Fund flows from operations were C$237 million, or C$1.55 per basic share, against C$254 million and C$1.65 in the third quarter of 2025. By OptimistFi's calculation, the total fell 6.7%.
Production averaged 117,349 boe/d, after planned maintenance in Ireland, Germany and Canada. A year earlier it was 119,062 boe/d.
Prices helped. Vermilion realized C$5.60 per mcf for natural gas, up from C$4.36 a year earlier and more than triple the AECO benchmark. Crude oil and condensate fetched C$130.00 per barrel, up from C$91.93.
Net loss was C$35 million, or C$0.23 per basic share. Non-cash losses on risk management contracts drove it. They came to C$245 million, or C$188 million after taxes, as forward oil and European gas prices rose. Vermilion says these mark-to-market losses do not reflect underlying cash generation. It adds that higher forward prices improve its future revenue and FFO outlook.

Debt and shareholder returns
The balance sheet looks strongest. Net debt fell by about C$60 million to C$1.17 billion at Sept. 30. That is 15.8% below C$1.38 billion a year earlier by OptimistFi's calculation. The ratio of net debt to trailing four-quarter fund flows is 1.2, down from 1.4.
Vermilion says net debt is down by about C$900 million over the past 18 months. It also says production per share has grown by about 50% since it closed the largest cash acquisition in its history.
Free cash flow of over C$90 million fully funded C$146 million of exploration and development spending. The company returned C$41 million to shareholders, C$21 million as dividends and C$20 million as buybacks. That is twice the value repurchased through the first half. Its framework targets returning 40% to 60% of EFCF, and dividends run below 10% of fund flows. A C$0.135 quarterly dividend is payable Dec. 31.
Where the 2027 money goes
Vermilion plans to spend about C$385 million in the Montney and Deep Basin. That covers 41 (36.3 net) Deep Basin wells and 13 (13.0 net) Montney wells.
International spending is planned at about C$315 million, over 50% more than in 2026. It includes two (1.3 net) follow-up wells at Wisselshorst in Germany, two (1.0 net) wells in the Netherlands and a two-well (2.0 net) Australia program starting in the second half.
Not all of it pays back in 2027. About C$150 million of the budget is forecast to add production starting in 2028. Vermilion puts stay-flat capital at C$565 million per year. Third-party gas processing in Northeast British Columbia has been delayed, so the Montney's 28,000 boe/d target moves to early 2029 from mid-2028.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that Vermilion works only if its assets turn mid-cycle prices into durable cash flow without another balance-sheet or impairment cycle. A higher five-year EFCF estimate and lower net debt move in that direction, so the report strengthens the case.
The support is not all durable. Vermilion ties its forecast of significantly higher fourth-quarter FFO partly to elevated European gas prices. In Canada it deferred well start-ups and restricted gas output to wait for higher pricing. Hedges cover 53% of expected net-of-royalty production for the rest of 2026 and 38% in 2027, so less of next year's volume is protected.
Third-quarter fund flows and production were both below a year earlier. The raised outlook rests on pricing and the 2027 plan, not on the quarter.
What's next
Vermilion expects Q4 production to average 121,000 boe/d. It expects full-year production of about 122,400 boe/d, which it calls upwardly revised, on capital spending of about C$620 million. Holders of record on Dec. 15 receive the C$0.135 dividend on Dec. 31.
The board is scheduled to consider the 2027 dividend increase in March 2027. The next quarterly report will show whether Q4 fund flows land significantly above Q3's C$237 million and whether production meets the 121,000 boe/d forecast. A miss on either would weaken the case for the raised outlook.
