Why it matters
OptimistFi's case is that Union Pacific turns pricing and productivity gains into stable cash generation. This quarter supports that view. Operating income rose $394 million to $2.94 billion from $2.55 billion, based on OptimistFi's calculation from the filing.
Adjusted net income rose to $2.1 billion from $1.8 billion. Adjusted diluted EPS rose to $3.53 from $3.08. Productivity also improved. Freight car velocity was 228 daily miles per car, average terminal dwell was 19.9 hours and workforce productivity was 1,219 car miles per employee.
For the first nine months, net income was $5.77 billion, up from $5.29 billion. Dividends declared per share were $4.18. Year to date, operating income was $8.16 billion and operating ratio was 59.7%, with adjusted operating ratio at 59.3%.
Free cash flow for the first nine months was $2.36 billion, up from $1.86 billion a year earlier. That came after operating cash flow of $8.30 billion and capital investments of $2.83 billion. The company also said annual dividend increases remain part of the outlook. Fuel expense rose 69%, and higher fuel prices unfavorably impacted operating ratio by 140 basis points.

What's next
The next scheduled update is the third-quarter 2026 earnings conference call on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at 8:45 a.m. Eastern Time. Union Pacific also said it looks forward to the Surface Transportation Board's merger review process.
If management keeps the outlook intact and the operating ratio near current levels, that supports the case.
If fuel costs keep pressuring margins, the quarter will look less durable.
