Elanco (NYSE: ELAN) raises full-year outlook and hits a debt milestone early

What happened

Elanco Animal Health Incorporated (NYSE: ELAN) raised full-year 2026 guidance after third-quarter revenue rose 11% to $1.26 billion. Organic constant currency growth was 9%. That measure strips out foreign exchange, the April 2026 AHV International acquisition and royalty revenue sold to a third party.

The company now expects full-year revenue of $5.16 billion to $5.18 billion. That is approximately 8% organic constant currency growth, up from 6% to 7% before. It also raised its innovation revenue target to $1.27 billion. CEO Jeff Simmons said the raise is meant to fully pass through the third-quarter beat.

What the new guidance says

The revenue raise lifts the midpoint of the range by $52.5 million, OptimistFi calculates, compared with the August range of $5.09 billion to $5.14 billion. Profit guidance moved up too. Adjusted EBITDA guidance is above the August range and implies a 17% increase at the midpoint from 2025.

Adjusted EPS guidance is $1.17 to $1.20, a 26% increase at the midpoint, versus $1.10 to $1.16 in August. For the fourth quarter, Elanco guides to revenue of $1.19 billion to $1.22 billion, adjusted EBITDA of $185 million to $200 million and adjusted EPS of $0.16 to $0.19. Excluding foreign exchange, AHV and sold royalties, it expects fourth-quarter revenue growth of 4% to 6%.

Where the growth came from

Pet Health led. Revenue there was $608 million, up 14% from $533 million a year earlier. Strong demand for Zenrelia, Credelio Quattro and AdTab drove volume. Credelio Quattro became Elanco's largest U.S. Pet Health branded product, passing Seresto.

Price rose 4% across the company, better than Elanco expected, and volume rose 5%. Adjusted gross margin reached 56.1%, up 300 basis points. The company credited higher pricing and a favorable mix from U.S. Pet Health and global ruminants.

Not every line grew. Poultry revenue fell 7% to $201 million. Seresto was hurt by a U.S. retailer inventory drawdown, though Elanco said its underlying performance was in line with expectations. Cattle revenue rose 17% to $339 million.

Why it matters

OptimistFi has argued that Elanco works if its portfolio turns recurring animal-disease needs into cash growth while the balance-sheet drag shrinks. This quarter best supports the balance-sheet half. Net leverage was 2.9x adjusted EBITDA on Sept. 30, down 0.7x from Dec. 31, 2025. That is the level Elanco now targets for year-end.

Net debt was $3 billion against trailing twelve-month adjusted EBITDA of $1.05 billion. CFO Bob VanHimbergen said reaching the ratio early gives Elanco more room to allocate capital sooner.

Reported profit is still thin. Net income was $18 million, or $0.04 a share, against a $34 million loss a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA rose 23% to $243 million, a 19.5% margin against 17.5% a year earlier. Amortization of intangible assets, at $144 million, is the largest item between reported and adjusted net income.

Costs are rising with sales. Operating expenses were $492 million, up 12% on higher pay and launch investments. Net interest expense rose $7 million to $59 million. Cash from operations was $216 million, compared with $219 million a year earlier, so cash did not grow with revenue in the quarter.

What's next

Credelio Quattro received a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency. Elanco expects to launch it in the EU in Q1 2027. Befrena moves into full launch in the same quarter, and Elanco expects to fill all outstanding orders by next week.

For 2027, Elanco still expects results in line with its December 2025 Investor Day algorithm. That means mid-single-digit organic constant currency revenue growth, high-single-digit adjusted EBITDA growth and low-double-digit adjusted EPS growth. The next quarterly report will show whether Elanco lands inside its guided ranges. Reported earnings that rise faster than costs would strengthen the case. Another quarter of flat operating cash flow would weaken it.
