Editas Medicine (NASDAQ: EDIT) clears EDIT-401 for first-in-human trial in Australia

What happened

Editas Medicine, Inc. (NASDAQ: EDIT) said Australia approved its Phase 1/2 Strive trial of EDIT-401 in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. The company said the study has Human Research Ethics Committee approval and has completed Australia’s Clinical Trial Notification process with the Therapeutic Goods Administration. It has also been submitted for review in New Zealand. If approved there, patients in both countries could enroll. Editas selected five clinical trial sites across Australia and New Zealand.

The trial will test the safety, tolerability and efficacy of a single dose of EDIT-401. Part 1 is a single ascending dose, dose-finding, open-label study. Part 2 is a single-dose randomized, placebo-controlled expansion study. Editas will present new preclinical data on the durability of LDL-C reduction at AHA Scientific Sessions 2026 on November 8, 2026.

Why it matters

OptimistFi’s case is that EDIT creates value only if Editas gets clinical or partner validation before cash burn and dilution pressure the balance sheet. This filing helps that case by moving EDIT-401 from preclinical work into a first-in-human study, with patient dosing still planned this year. The company also says EDIT-401 directly edits the LDLR gene to increase LDLR protein expression and reduce LDL-cholesterol levels.

Editas said preclinical studies showed mean reductions of 90 percent or greater in LDL-C, Lp(a) and ApoB in non-human primates. It also said about 90 percent LDL-C reduction held for 10 months. The filing is still only approval to start a trial, not human safety, tolerability or efficacy data.

What's next

Editas expects initial safety and tolerability data in the first quarter of 2027. The company plans to complete enrollment in Part 1 later in 2027, with topline safety and efficacy data later that year.

Editas will present the preclinical data at AHA Scientific Sessions 2026 on November 8, 2026. A clean safety readout would strengthen the case, while a delay or weak result would weaken it.
