Study says Ecstasy Causes Loss of Memory

A recent study has said there is link between Ecstasy use and memory loss. The research was done by German scientists who said over 100 users of Ecstasy were tracked over a one year period. The research found that the users did not perform as well on tests when the study concluded. The researchers said the most obvious damage was in associative memory. An example of that is a user of Ecstasy might have a hard time remembering where they left their keys.

The researchers also said they were quite surprised at the specific effects since the amount of time the drug was used was relatively short and the amount of ecstasy used was very little.

The ecstasy users took on average 32 pills during the course of the yearlong study. That was slightly more than one pill every second weekend. In 2007, similar results came back from another study.

The findings of the most recent study did not use brain imaging to confirm there was damage in the hippocampus area of the brain and that has caused some researchers to second guess the latest study. The hippocampus is the section of the brain that has to do with a person’s long term memory.

Other doctors said it is uncertain whether cannabis, which was uncontrolled in the recent study, played any role in the patients having memory loss. Previous studies have found that cannabis also can cause memory loss or impairment.

Those who have doubts say the study did not rule out that other factors, such as cannabis, could have had an effect on the results of the study.
