Samuel See died during the night in a jail cell he was held in following an alleged fight he had with police who had responded to a call over a domestic disturbance.
The Yale professor, who was just 34, was arrested by the New Haven police after they responded to a disturbance at his home, where they found him arguing with Sunder Ganglani his estranged husband.
Ganglani, who is 32, had gone to See’s home to pick up some of his belongings, which violated a protection order when he stayed for more than two hours.
At that point, the troubled professor became outraged and started to fight with officers while they attempted to handcuff him.
See could be heard shouting, I will destroy you, I will kill you, while being led away by police.
The professor, who taught American studies and English, was found in his cell unresponsive at 6 a.m. the following morning.
Authorities attempted CPR to revive See, but it was unsuccessful. A short time later, the professor was pronounced dead. Authorities do not believe he committed suicide.
This is not the first time See, who earned a doctorate from UCLA in English, had been in a tussle with police. This past semester Lee had taken a leave of absence from the prestigious university in Connecticut.
Yale released a prepared statement that said the entire university community had been deeply saddened upon hearing of the death of See.
The statement concluded by saying condolences were sent out to See’s family, his colleagues in the faculty and students, along with all his friends both at Yale and beyond.
The campus was the backdrop where the two, who were married this past May, met. Ganglani was employed at the Foundry Theater as an artistic producer and was a teaching assistant.
According to a LinkedIn page, Ganglani new works and lives in New York City, but has not made any public comment since See’s death.
