Vice President Biden rips Romney over Social Security

While President Barack Obama was focusing on his fundraising, Vice President Joe Biden was campaigning on Friday by attacking challenger Mitt Romney over Social Security.

Biden started a two-day trip through Florida on Friday, which is home to a large number of senior citizens. Biden started the trip by saying the proposed tax cuts by Romney would actually create higher taxes on the current Social Security benefits so that the program could be sustained. Biden said it could mean all taxpayers would be paying more taxes on their Social Security.

Biden was talking on Friday to over 850 people at a Boca Raton retirement community. He said that at this time the majority of senior citizens are not required to pay any taxes on benefits they receive from Social Security.

Romney campaign members said Biden’s charge was false and said the Social Security Trust Fund was scheduled to be exhausted before 2033. A Romney spokesperson said that seniors are going to be faced with an across the board cut in benefits of 25% because of the failure of President Obama to lead on the issue.

The Romney spokesperson said Romney’s plan to first save and then strengthen Social Security does not increase taxes and it ensures the middle class seniors will receive all the benefits they earned.

Biden linked the plans of Romney to those of Paul Ryan his vice presidential running mate, who wants to revamp Social Security and Medicare to help cut the federal debt that has reached $16 trillion.
