Tornadoes touch down in two New York City Boroughs

On Saturday, it was confirmed by the National Weather Service that two tornadoes touched down in New York City. One was confirmed in Brooklyn, while the other touched down in Queens.

The tornado that was in Brooklyn was categorized by the NWS as an EF1 tornado. That category tornado has a potential to have winds as high as 110 mph. The NWS estimated that the tornado that was in Queens was 600 feet long and 50 yards wide. That tornado received a classification of EF0 and had winds up to 85 miles per hour.

Until Saturday night, all five boroughs in New York City had a tornado watch. The city also had a tornado warning issues for Brooklyn and Queens that was ended Saturday at 11:30 am.

The tornadoes touched down and left streets covered in downed trees and branches. However, there were no reports of personal injury.

Residents said that roofs were ripped off homes and were thrown into neighbors yards. Windows were blown out of store fronts in Brooklyn when the tornado touched down.

Officials were going through buildings to check if any had suffered structural damage. One car parked on the street had its windshield pierced with a branch.

Very strong storms also ripped through the metropolitan area of the nation’s capital on Saturday. The weather on the east coast has been unseasonably hot and humid, which is the perfect recipe for dangers storms.
