An Elkhart, Indiana Pizza Hut manager was fired after refusing to open his store on Thanksgiving.
Many restaurants and stores will be open for business this year during Thanksgiving Day. A man from Indiana lost his employment due to that.
Tony Rohr said he thinks people should not be required to work on Thanksgiving. Rohr was employed with Pizza Hut for over 10 years, but he said he lost his job recently because he had refused to open the store on November 28, which happens to be Thanksgiving Day.
Rohr said Pizza Hut authorities said he was required to open the store on Thanksgiving. During a meeting with superiors, Rohr said he decided to make a point.
Rohr said he decided to stand up to his superiors for his employees. He told his bosses he would not open his Elkhart store.
He said that Thanksgiving and Christmas years past were the only two days his employees were guaranteed time off to spend with family.
His superiors told him he had to sign a resignation letter, but Rohr said he refused. He instead sent a letter explaining his position to his superiors.
In his letter, he wrote he was not quitting or resigning but expected that by not complying with the immoral, greedy request meant his tenure would end with Pizza Hut.
He continued in his letter saying that it was those on the bottom of the totem pole that made life possible for the rest.
He received support from both his family and girlfriend.
Rohr remains unemployed at the moment and is looking for employment. However, he says the stand he took was worth it.
One former boss of Rohr’s claims that Rohr quit and was not fired. He said that opening on Thanksgiving was not the decision of an individual, it was a decision made by the company.
The Pizza Hut representative also said that the choice by Pizza Hut to open on Thanksgiving had been in line with many other local and national restaurants and stores.
