The Home Office Interior Ministry of Britain is investigating a report that Anonymous the hacking group attacked it’s website because of the government’s plans to increase its surveillance on the Internet. When visitors tried to enter the site, they received a message that said the site was not available due to a high traffic volume on the site. Accounts on Twitter that are linked to the Anonymous group called for the site to be targeted. A ministry spokesperson said, “We have a report that says the Home Office site may have been hacked as a form of an online protest.”
The Home Office said they had put in place all of the potential measures to monitor what was happening and search for the reason they site was shut down. The Home Office is also preparing for any future attacks by having the proper monitoring devices in place. The government has come under a great deal of fire in the past week due to proposals they are reviewing that will allow agencies to monitor emails, calls, text messages and visits to websites.
All this is part of their effort to eradicated terrorism and serious crime. Anonymous has hacked a number of government websites around the world as well as companies that do business with governments. Last year, the group was able to hack the website of the CIA, FBI and other law enforcement sites.
