A computer analyst says he feels that based on prior models’ sales the new iPhone 5 will sell about 170 million units through the middle of next year. He said that out of the more than 200 million iPhones that should be sold in the next 12 months, the new generation iPhone 5 will account for close to 170 million.
The analysts said sales of all iPhones should reach 200 million and that the iPhone 5 will get close to 85% of the total. He arrived at the figures by quoting Phil Schiller the marketing chief for Apple. While testifying for Apple at the current trial between Apple and Samsung, Schiller explained what the projections were by the company for sales of the iPhone. He said that each new generation iPhone they launch in the market usually sells the about the same as all of the prior generations put together.
Taking those projections the analyst found that that iPhone 3G was about to out sell the first iPhone by more than four times. The 3GS succeeded in outselling the original and the 3G both combined by 1.6 times.
The latest version, iPhone 4 has been able to outsell all prior models and the 4S is about 50% of the way to surpassing the first four iPhone models combined in sales. If the 4S lasts for another year, it will handily out sell the other models before it goes into retirement.
The analyst predicted lifetime sales of the iPhone 5 of over 200 million over the next two calendar years and believes it may even approach 250 million.
