What Innospec (IOSP) Said on Its Q3 Earnings Call

Innospec (NASDAQ:IOSP) reported higher third-quarter revenue, earnings and operating income across its three business segments, while management said it expects continued strength in Fuel Specialties and sequential improvement in Oilfield Services during the fourth quarter.

Total third-quarter revenue rose 7% year over year to $473.6 million. Gross margin increased 0.9 percentage points to 27.3%, while adjusted EBITDA climbed to $51.4 million from $44.2 million in the prior-year period. Net income attributable to Innospec was $31.8 million, compared with $12.9 million a year earlier.

GAAP earnings per share were $1.29, with no net impact from special items. That compared with GAAP EPS of $0.52 a year earlier, when results included a $0.60-per-share negative impact from special items. Adjusted EPS was $1.29, up from $1.12 in the prior-year quarter.

“This was a strong quarter for Innospec, with all businesses delivering sales growth and operating income improvement,” President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Williams said.

Performance Chemicals margins improve

Performance Chemicals revenue increased 6% to $180.5 million. A 5% decline in volume and a 1% negative currency impact were more than offset by a 12% improvement in price mix, driven by higher raw-material pricing.

The segment’s gross margin rose to 18.8% from 15.1% a year earlier, and operating income increased 84% to $16.9 million. Chief Financial Officer Ian Cleminson said fourth-quarter Performance Chemicals results are expected to be similar to the third quarter.

Williams said efficiency upgrades at the company’s North Carolina plant remain on schedule for completion by year-end. The upgrades are intended to raise capacity, productivity and yields across personal-care and other products. Management said the company first prioritized returning the plant to operational status and supplying customers, followed by the efficiency work.

Williams said Innospec does not need to requalify products with customers, but recovering lost sales will take time. He said the company expects sequential growth rather than a sharp volume increase, while focusing the expanded capacity on new, higher-margin technologies instead of commodity products.

Fuel Specialties remains within target margin range

Fuel Specialties revenue increased 5% to $180.7 million, reflecting a 3% increase in volume and a 2% improvement in price mix. Gross margin declined by 0.5 percentage points from the prior year to 31.5%, while operating income increased 1% to $35.6 million.

Management attributed the performance to the segment’s handling of volatile raw-material and freight costs. Cleminson said pricing mechanisms include some lag as costs move through the business, but management expects fourth-quarter margins to remain at approximately current levels.

Williams characterized Fuel Specialties as a historically stable, well-managed margin business, supported in part by contractual structures. The company expects continued steady and strong results from the segment, along with seasonal demand in coming quarters.

Oilfield Services affected by Middle East delays

Oilfield Services revenue rose 13% to $112.4 million. Gross margin fell to 28.2% from 30% a year earlier because of a weaker sales mix, but operating income increased 40% to $6.7 million.

Williams said improved volumes from Innospec’s recent drag-reducing agent, or DRA, plant expansion supported the segment’s operating-income growth. However, third-quarter results were below management’s expectations because of activity delays in its legacy Middle East business and elevated raw-material costs.

During the question-and-answer session, Williams said the Middle East disruption primarily affected production and stimulation work rather than the DRA business. He said operating conditions had made it difficult to get personnel into the field, though the impact was not a significant percentage of the business.

Management expects some recovery in the fourth quarter as activity returns and said it sees further sequential growth opportunities in 2027. Williams said Innospec has not recorded sales in Mexico to date, despite potential longer-term opportunity if investment in petrochemicals and crude production develops.

Cash flow and dividend actions

Cash from operating activities was $17.4 million before capital expenditures of $15.6 million. As of Sept. 30, Innospec had $251.9 million in cash and cash equivalents and no debt.

Cleminson said working capital had increased by roughly $80 million since the start of the year, partly reflecting business expansion, higher raw-material and freight costs, inventory levels and receivables. He said the company expects some reversal in the fourth quarter and projected free cash flow of about $40 million to $50 million for the period.

For 2027, management said it expects free cash flow of approximately $55 million to $60 million, assuming relatively stable raw-material conditions and capital expenditures near $60 million.

Innospec’s board approved an increase in its semiannual dividend to $0.94 per share, representing a 9% increase in the annual dividend. Williams said the company’s net cash position provides flexibility for organic investment, acquisitions, dividend growth and share repurchases.
