AllianceBernstein (NYSE:AB) reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $0.88 per unit, up 2% from a year earlier and 7% sequentially, as higher base and performance fees and expense discipline supported results. The firm said adjusted net revenues rose 2% year over year and from the prior quarter to $904 million, while adjusted operating margin expanded to 33.5% from 33% in the second quarter.
Chief Executive Officer Seth Bernstein also addressed the company’s planned leadership transition. Bernstein, who has led the firm for nearly a decade, is set to retire and remain on the board, while President Onur Erzan will become CEO on April 1, 2027.
“These achievements are not an endpoint,” Bernstein said of the firm’s recent strategic progress. “They are a foundation upon which AB’s next chapter of growth will be built.”
Assets, Flows and Corebridge Opportunity
AllianceBernstein ended the quarter with approximately $900 billion in assets under management. Management said it sees a path to $1 trillion in AUM as it onboards roughly $100 billion of assets from Corebridge over time. Bernstein said the Corebridge relationship could also create opportunities to commercialize capabilities in private placements, mortgage loans and real estate equity.
Firmwide net inflows approached $7 billion during the quarter, representing a 3% annualized organic growth rate and the second consecutive quarter of organic growth. Alternatives and multi-asset solutions generated $15 billion of net inflows, including approximately $12 billion of commercial mortgage loans onboarded from Equitable. Excluding that commercial mortgage loan mandate, the segment still posted positive net inflows for its seventh straight quarter, the company said.
Institutional net inflows reached nearly $16 billion, a quarterly record, driven primarily by the commercial mortgage loan assets. The company also funded nearly $5 billion of previously awarded mandates during the period and reported $13 billion in institutional pipeline AUM at quarter-end, excluding the expected Corebridge corporate opportunity.
Municipal strategies recorded nearly $2 billion of net inflows, marking AllianceBernstein’s 15th consecutive quarter of positive municipal flows. Taxable fixed income saw nearly $4 billion of institutional inflows, mainly in investment-grade strategies, but more than $3 billion of retail outflows amid elevated rate volatility. Passive equity strategies generated more than $2 billion of inflows, while active equities had more than $12 billion of outflows concentrated in the company’s largest mutual funds.
Private Markets and Distribution Platforms Expand
Private markets AUM surpassed $105 billion, exceeding AllianceBernstein’s prior $90 billion to $100 billion target more than a year ahead of its original 2027 deadline. The platform includes private placements, direct lending, alternative credit and commercial real estate lending. Commercial real estate lending exceeded $20 billion after the addition of nearly $12 billion in commercial mortgage loans from Equitable.
Erzan said the company has participated in financing transactions tied to data centers and the AI-related capital-expenditure cycle, while emphasizing a cautious approach to concentration and risk management. He said those transactions have generally offered high-yield-like returns with investment-grade credits.
Active ETFs reached $21 billion in AUM across 34 products. The platform posted 31% annualized organic asset growth during the third quarter and 68% growth over the past 12 months, according to management. The company said the franchise now generates roughly $100 million in annualized management fees.
Retail separately managed accounts stood at $68 billion, with 15% annualized organic growth in the third quarter. AllianceBernstein said it is expanding its SMA offerings beyond municipals into taxable fixed income. Management also cited international opportunities for active ETFs, including in Taiwan, Japan, continental Europe and selected Latin American markets.
Wealth, Insurance and Retirement Remain Strategic Priorities
Bernstein Private Wealth ended the quarter with $165 billion in client assets, or 18% of firmwide AUM, and contributed more than one-third of company revenue. While the business reported negative third-quarter net flows, management said about $500 million of outflows reflected client rebalancing that is expected to be redeployed into the platform during the fourth quarter.
Private Wealth saw more than $1 billion of inflows into alternatives and approximately $300 million into direct-index equities. New alternative strategies raised roughly $600 million during the quarter. Erzan said the firm had added about 25 advisors year to date and had additional advisors scheduled to join during the fourth quarter.
The company manages $226 billion in net insurance assets, including $58 billion for more than 100 third-party insurance clients. General account assets totaled $139 billion, up 18% from a year earlier. Its customized retirement platform held nearly $117 billion of assets.
Bernstein said the combination of insurance, retirement and wealth-management businesses represented about half of firmwide AUM and provides access to long-duration capital. He said the planned Corebridge asset onboarding could support the development and scaling of new investment capabilities across private and public markets.
Financial Outlook and Fixed-Income View
Third-quarter base fees increased 3% year over year to $845 million. Performance fees totaled about $26 million, compared with $20 million a year earlier, including $21 million from private markets and $5 million from public-market strategies.
Total operating expenses rose 3% year over year to $601 million. AllianceBernstein maintained a 48.5% compensation ratio and expects that ratio to remain at that level in the fourth quarter. The company narrowed its full-year non-compensation expense outlook to $620 million to $635 million, from a prior range of $620 million to $640 million.
The firm raised its 2026 performance-fee outlook to $135 million to $150 million, assuming flat markets for the rest of the year. It now expects private-market performance fees of $60 million to $65 million and public-market performance fees of $75 million to $85 million. The company maintained its expected effective tax-rate range of 5% to 6%.
Management said its 37.1-basis-point firmwide base-fee rate, net of distribution expense, declined sequentially due to a low-fee passive fixed-income mandate and the commercial mortgage loan onboarding. Simeone said the commercial mortgage loan portfolio did not begin generating management fees until the fourth quarter.
On fixed income, Erzan said higher yields create an opportunity for investors to rebalance portfolios, though taxable retail and Asian investors may wait for greater stability in rates and Federal Reserve policy before returning at scale. Bernstein said gatekeepers were increasingly viewing current municipal yields as an attractive entry point, though the company expects the recovery in demand to unfold over several quarters.
