Is AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTS) U.S. Service Continuous?

What happened

No. AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTS) has enabled more than 3,000 digital coverage cells across the contiguous United States, but its October 20 announcement still calls the first service intermittent. A prepared cell is a place where the network can connect when satellite coverage is available. It is not a promise of an always-on signal.

The company plans roughly 5,600 U.S. cells in all and expects to enable the remainder by year-end. It also says more than 60 gateways are deployed, installed or planned globally. Those three statuses are not interchangeable: a planned gateway is not yet an operating one.

Why it matters

Divide 3,000 by the roughly 5,600 planned cells and the result is 53.6%. Because the company said more than 3,000 and roughly 5,600, about 54% is an illustrative lower-end planning comparison, not a measured percentage of people, land area or minutes of usable service.

There is another wrinkle. An August 10 issuer update already said more than 3,000 continental-U.S. digital cells had been activated. The October release uses 'enabled' rather than 'activated' and gives no precise added count, so subtracting the two rounded figures would manufacture a growth rate.

The cells organize where a phone can be served. Spacecraft determine when a signal passes overhead. In its June-quarter filing, AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTS) said it expected 25 satellites to support noncontinuous service in selected markets, 45 to 60 for continuous service in key markets, and about 90 for its targeted markets. Those were plans, not achieved coverage claims.

The favorable reading is that ground preparation is moving ahead of initial service, with gateway work and mobile-network partners in place. The harder commercial test has not arrived: the same filing reported no SpaceMobile Service revenue through June 30. Its $31.5 million of second-quarter revenue came chiefly from gateway equipment and software, plus government services, not consumer satellite subscriptions.

What's next

Watch for the actual launch of intermittent service, disclosed satellite coverage duration and paid usage, then enough spacecraft and regulatory clearance for continuous U.S. availability. Even a successful service rollout would not by itself establish an attractive valuation for shares of AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTS). The price and cost of sustained delivery still matter.
