Underworld: Awakening Rises To The Top

The newest installation in the Underworld series has taken top spot at the Box Office.

January 22, 2012- Vampire-thriller Underworld: Awakening, the fourth in a vampire thriller series, took the top spot for its debut weekend at the box office. Awakening took in $25.4 million and was followed by Red Tails

Kate Beckinsale stars as the tough heroine in the Sony Pictures fourth edition of the Underworld series. Trailing Awakening in second place was Red Tails, directed by George Lucas. Red Tails follows the lives of the Tuskegee Airmen and finished the weekend with just over $19 million.

Ticket sales at the box office were higher for the third consecutive week in January compared to the same period last year. Sales this past weekend were 32% higher than the same weekend last year.

Awakening is the first in the series to be released in 3-D and box office receipts showed that 59% of those who saw the vampire flick opted to see the more expensive 3-D version.

Red Tails stars Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. and is being distributed by 20th Century Fox. Lucas financed the entire $58 million to produce the film and is paying to market it as well.

Red Tails took a long time to reach the public, as there were reports that reshoots were made up to two years ago. Many critics did not like the film but its second place finish at the box office proves the public certainly does.
