The 2011 Golden Globe nominations will be announced today.
December 15, 2011- The Golden Globes have often been an excellent way of predicting which movies will get best-picture nominations for an Oscar. However, they are not quite as good as predicting who the eventual winner of the Academy Award will be.
Voters of the Globes used to have a proven track record in forecasting the best-picture Oscar winner. However, of late they have been missing the mark more than hitting it. Only one top Globe winner has gone on to claim the top prize during the Oscars in the past seven years.
The nominations for the Golden Globes will be announced today and this year they may have better luck. This year’s show has two categories for best picture. One is for dramas and the other includes comedies or musicals. Musicals and comedies do not generally offer serious contenders at the Academy Awards for best picture. That award tends to be dominated by dramas.
Nevertheless, a silent film in black and white, The Artist, is a solid comedy this season that could challenge the nominees for best picture at the Oscars. If the movie is to win the comedy or musical prize at the Golden Globes, it might end up in a showdown for the Oscar with the Globe best picture drama winner. The contenders for dramas may include The Help, The Descendants, War House and Hugo.
